NEWSLETTER ? 30TH
JANUARY 2000
The enthusiasm of late 1999 was still with us
and 22 riders turned out for the first race of the season.
We welcomed prospective new members ? Suz Riley
a young veteran and a decorative addition to the membership, hope to see
you again Suz, you will have a young competitor in the shape of Lee Adamson
from the northern club to keep you company in combined events. Shane
Hickey turned up and had an excellent ride, Wayne Smith, who thought you
were all mad to punish yourselves but had a change of heart when he realised
the effort got him 3rd place in Div.4. also a welcome addition to
Div. 1 Michael Gargioni, newly turned veteran this year. Welcome
back to Peter Dwyer also , who proved all that travelling hasnít dulled
his performance as a bike rider, and an old member- Steven Chopping,
has joined the ranks once more.
Roger Janes started the year off well with a delicious Apfel Cake to have with coffee after the racing, we donít necessarily insist that rostered drivers should bring a cake, but all donations would be gratefully received. Thanks Roger, also thanks to John Cover, in the lead car for organising themselves so well, whilst I went in to panic mode trying to get all THOSE LICENCES written out.
Our enthusiastic President,Brendon Mahoney lead
the rush at the start and held on to Dennis in the sprint.
Mike Logan had an excellent ride, pipping Michael
Garglioni at the finish. We are watching you Mike Logan!!!
A lean and mean Brett Richardson on the Dream
Machine showed a significant increase in performance, perhaps this is his
year to rise to giddy heights.

We had an odd number of riders turn out for the Teams Points Race (however that could be said about any week really!!!) We made up four teams of four + 1 and apportioned the points from the extra rider in team 2 to all the other last riders to give the correct number of points. Two teams scored the same number of points but due to the fact that the leader of team No.1 crossed the line first that team was accorded the prize money, and if you can understand all that you are a better man than I am.
Quote of the millenium from the Vets Gazette in Victoria:-
"A point of view ? if you have not done a turn of pace (or at least tried), then you have not earned the right to contest the sprint finish"
now that wouldnít happen here, would it??!!
Regarding the question of insurance coverage whilst out training, brought
up at the AGM by Murray Davies- I asked his name-sake Mel Davies, Secretary
of the AVCC to clarify this for me and he said that WHETHER YOU TRAIN ALONE
OR IN A GROUP, OR IF PART OF YOUR TRAINING INCLUDES RIDING TO WORK THEN
YOU ARE COVERED.
Hope that clarifies things for you.
On the notice board are two (only) entry forms for Maryborough ? forwarded by Mel Davies ? I have faxed Ray Aldridge for more and will make them available as soon as I receive them.
Good to see Bob Bright with us whilst down here on holiday from the far north of the State.
A nerve racking finish for the time-keeper with 11 riders contesting the sprint, could you please come in smaller bunches.

It turned out a very pleasant day and 26 riders presented for a 40K
Graded Handicap ? we welcomed potential new members Mark Datlen and Michael
Ward. Good to have Robert Taylor (affectionately known amongst the
ranks as Mr.T) back out with us, apparently he has been doing some secret
training
(lots of in fact) which paid off in his "first over the line"position.
According to the handicapper ? all riders performed above their expected
potential, with excellent times, lead by a very impressive performance
by David Dennis, which should stand him in good stead for the Austral Wheel
Race, in which he is competeing this weekend. Good Luck David.
Good to see Mark Bright returning to his previous form, also Dave Silk,
and Ray Appleby organising Div.3 to perform as well as they did.
The Secretary of the Northern Vets.- Robin Gregory, has been competing
in the Masters Games in N.Z. this last week, hope he did well for Tasmanian
Veterans cycling, which I believe he would make every effort to do.
Overall winners across the Line- lst. R.Taylor, 2nd A.Mills, 3rd M.
Bright
This is short and sweet this week as computer is playing up againÖ.
Lots of entry forms for the Maryborough events at Easter are now available,
also preliminary information from Bill Long for Warrnambool. Check the
notice board.

23 riders turned out for the magical mystery tour ? 42k- ish race last
Sunday, with John Corey visiting from Victoria, (who according to his wife
was not allowed to win, but did) ?change of number for you this week John,
looked like you enjoyed the race. Thanks to Nolene for helping at the finish
and to the ladies who did the washing up. The Div.1 riders seemed
to be impervious to head winds and hills and continue to ride at a frenetic
pace. Greg Bennetts running training for the marathon in Sydney in
May appears to have benefited his anaerobic capacity
Alan Williamson turned out to take his turn at driving, good to see
you Alan, hope you continue to make good progress with your recovery.
Thanks to our "lost Marshall" Helen who valiantly picked up her lollipop
stick and witches hats and started walking. Alan happily waved to
her and kept going, Helen happily waved back, and then started to walk-
Rex found her 3 kms further on. Thanks for the effort Helen, we will
definitely remind drivers to remember to bring back the marshall in future.
I felt slightly disorganised last week with the change of venue for
the finish, and the speed at which the riders came over the line made it
difficult to record the numbers but I promise to get better.
I know some of you were disappointed not to take home your prize money,
but I have saved it for you.
Good news on the prize money front which I know Mike Logan will be
pleased about- the FINGAL TO MATHINNA RACE scheduled for 4th March,
has a prize pool of $600 so long as there is a minimum of 30 riders.
Details of the race ? approximately 52Km ? Entry fee $8.00
enter on the day - itís a flat, safe, good road, beautiful scenery (not
that some of you will have time to look at the scenery), RACE STARTS 1P.M.

approx.200yrds (Gavin only talks in imperial) Change rooms and showers
available. Presentation at 4p.m. to fit in with the Fingal Coal shovelling
etc, activities. (Rumour has it -it should suit the back markers
? if the handicapper is kind to you). The Northern chapter are looking
forward to seeing a good turn up from the South. If you could
let me know if you intend going Iíll be able to tell Michael Donovan and
make sure he is kind to you.
John Cover returned after contesting the Mountain Bike Championship
? he came third overall, beating a Dutch rider who happens to rank 6th
in Europe ? WELL DONE JOHN!

NEWSLETTER ? 27TH FEBRUARY 2000
19 riders turned out for the Criterium at Cove Hill. The weather
having settled down to just windy.
Welcome back to the hot south from the hot north to Brett Hansson,
who turned up to do his rostered car duty and acted as marshall. Thanks
to Mrs.Davies and Mrs.Mills for also helping with marshalling duties.
It is time to be thinking about fund raising for racing later in the
year, and as Mothersí Day is fast approaching could we please put our thoughts
to donating an item or two of non-perishable items to go in the hamper,
for the Mothersí Day Raffle. We will then organise books of small
tickets to be sold amongst family and friends.Thanks.
If any one else has any other ideas for fundraising we would be pleased
to hear them, especially ones that donít need too much effort.
An interesting article found in a newspaper by one of our riders re
cycling accident and the need for high standard of care needed to be extended
by drivers to other road users. But also indicates the need for riders
to be in clothing which would make them noticeable and use appropriate
lighting etc, whilst out at night.
The article is on the notice board if you should wish to read it.
A REMINDER - the Fingal to Mathinna - 52K Handicap on Saturday
4th March ? it would be good to support State Veteran Cycling and
have a ride in a different (scenically beautiful) area!
Start at 1 p.m. at Recreational Grounds. Good prize money
if 30 or more riders turn up Entry fee $8.00..
AND ? Max, we are still racing in the South on Sunday (sorry) ? in your
favourite race ? a 25K Time Trial!!!

Mark Bowden is involved in the Cradle to Coast which is also on next weekend, and if there is anyone who would like to help out, with marshalling or cars (for remuneration) he would love to hear from you- contact him after the racing today.
It seems a long time between Newsletters, I hope the computer has appreciated the rest.
Firstly a report on racing at Gulag-BroadmarshÖ..we were not disappointed
to find it was windy and cold as usual, in spite of which 28 keen riders
turned out. One of our prospective new members Michael Ward was unfortunately
unable to turn up due to an accident on Friday 25th, breaking his collarbone,
putting him out of action for some time. We hope he has a speedy recovery
and is able to join us again before too long.
The highlight of the day, apart from David Dennisís exceptional ride,
was the cake, supplied to celebrate Murray Daviesís 50th birthday. Thanks
for the chocy cake Helen, and for your help on the line, and transport
to the nearest facilities. Good to see Mark Bowden out with us again.
Although it was cold and windy at the start ? it warmed up for the
exciting finish- with the Division 1 riders catching most of the groups
before the turn. The handicapper has promised to take more notice
of the wind in future as well as the hot air!!!
Phil Salter also had an exceptional ride, keeping up with the front
bunch. We unfortunately had four riders who did not finish due to
equipment failure!

Saturday 4th March a group of 16 riders
headed north to Fingal, for the Fingal to Mathinna race- as part of the
Fingal Festival, the race was slotted in the programme in between the coal
shovelling, roof bolting and sheep herding. 42 riders set off
on the 52K-ish ride on what was reported as a "nice flat course", but apparently
it had some sneaky little rises in the road. Max OíHalloran
performed well but was piped at the post by northerner Lindsay Bourke,
to take 2nd prize, well done Max, see it was worth the drive "all that
way"!!!! The exceptional day was marred by the fall of four cyclists
about 7K from the finish, which halted some of the Scratch men, who would
have had a better result. However, only two of the four riders were
taken to hospital and the report is that Keith Dolting was in a neck brace
for a couple of days but is O.K. Rob Millin suffered scratches and bruises,
Peter Dadson had a headache, David Kemp ? likewise ? but his crash helmet
disintegrated. Better news that at first thought, however, the bike
shops will be doing well with repairs.
Our own Nigel Hume had a spill only 8kms into the race, but with the
adrenalin pumping he got back on his bike and was able to stay with the
Scratchies until the other crash when he dropped off the pace, but not
bad for a bloke who had been up fighting fires all night. Nigel suffered
bitumen rash and the bike needed a bit of TLC.
Mike Logan, Dave Silk, Ray Appleby, Robert Taylor and Steven Chopping
were also prizewinners in the first ten, and David Dennis got the trophy
for Fastest Time. Those of you who couldnít make it missed out on a really
good day.
15 really keen riders turned out for everyonesí favourite race ? including
some who had raced the previous day at Fingal. John Cover proved that a
good 52K warm up on the previous day works wonders for a time trialÖÖJohn
earned lst prize for a time of 38.32. Brilliant! Followed
closely by an ever enthusiastic Brendon Mahoney, and a great performance
by Rob Warren in third place. Although, I think that the effort
put in by one rider at Fingal was too much, he was seen riding out to the
start of the Time Trial with his slippers still on. I wonder how
far he would have got, if someone hadnít told him?!

There are other items I should put in this newsletter but I am running out of time and space. Will have to put them in next week.
One point I will mention is that the Mercury is trying to save, space, money, whatever, but our results will be much reduced in size. Handicaps will only be listed as first three prize winners, Graded Handicaps will be listed first three in each Division, etc. which is a rather poor advertisement for Veterans Cycling, when we have numbers of 27 turn out for a race, no one will know except us. Whatever happened to offering a service to your customers. So if you only buy the Mercury to read the sporting results, you wont need to anymore.!!!
There is also a notice on the board issued to the Northern Club re Club Jerseys, if you would all like to have a look at it and offer any comments,.we may be able to join them in their purchasing and thus reduce the cost.

24 enthusiastic riders turned out for a 50K sealed handicap, including
two potential new members. The very welcome Sally Holdsworth rode exceptionally
well, accompanied by an old and hopefully returning member Pete Smith (whose
presence would add a bit of spice to Division 1) The other potential new
member being Roger King, who also had a prizewinning first road race, being
an off-roader usually. He will be good company for our other champion off
roader, John Cover.
Rob Warren and Peter Dwyer were outstanding on the day.
Ray Appleby, Sus Riley and Norm Eastwood(back for first race of the
season) all decided discretion was the better part of valour on a hard
day, with an unusual south easterly, and shortened their race.

One of our riders printed out the following Traffic (road rules) which should be of interest to youó

Well I think we hit a record attendance for a non-feature event with
31 riders turning out for the 44.5K
Graded Scratch.
Thanks to Nick Osborne for being so well organised with car and turning
duties, we must also thank
Caroline (I am sorry I didnít get a surname)who "only came to have
a look", but got roped in to help with car duties. Hope we didnít put you
off Caroline. She did mention it was good fun watching all
the techniques, but I did point out to her that not all the "techniques"
she witnessed were good practice!!!!!!
IT IS AN ABSOLUTE NO-NO TO CROSS THE WHITE LINE AND RIDE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD WHEN CONTESTING A SPRINT (OR AT ALL ? COME TO THAT). The perpetrator has been severely reprimanded and has promised not to do it again!!!!
Graded Scratch Races ? In future all graded scratch races will be run with the A graders starting first. Although reminded not to sit on apparently some riders did so.
Another concern (voiced by onlookers at the finishing line) regarding riders "warming down" by riding back up the road, causing, in some instances, congestion with on coming cars and finishing riders. Would it be possible for riders to ride in the other direction, at all?
Thank you to those members who supported the Sports Card last week, the winning card was RIDING held by a most worthy winner, Mrs.Leonie Silk (thanks also to Leonie for all her help when she does attend races- but you canít win every time, o.k.?)
Sad news for the Club, Brett Richardson was badly injured in a hit and run accident during the Round the Rivers ride on Tuesday, he has been in the Royal Hobart Hospital being attended to and apparently is anxious to be back on the bike again. Best wishes Brett for a speedy and full recovery, looking forward to seeing you again.
We welcomed a prospective new member Ben Van Derssoleur, hope to see him out with us again.
As this newsletter goes to print, I have written out 100 licences for the year 2000 (hope to write two more this week). Last year we had 77 on the books.
Had an email from the Secretary of the Northern Chapter to advise that
the Northern Vets, are having a 50K feature race on 16th April, at Bracknell,
starting at 10 a,m. Entry fee $10.00 and they extend
an invitation to anyone interested in riding to please do so. It is a Graded
Handicap, with handsome prizes.

DONATIONS FOR THE MOTHERS DAY HAMPER WOULD STILL BE GREATLY APPRECIAT
There was I worrying that we would have more trophies than riders for
the Fletcher Challenge 50K, but I need not have worried, with a grand total
of 28 riders competing for the trophies and prize money over what our Northern
visitor called "a very hard course" ? the weather was kind to us with almost
no wind at one stage, and even the handicapping was enjoyed by some!!!!
Great ride by Nick Osborne to be overall winner, he deserved it (mind
you he also now deserves to resume his position in Division 2!!)
Following close on his heels was Clive Roper and Shane Hickey.
It can be said that all divisions performed beyond their expected capacity.
Average speeds being 38.2 for the Div 1 riders 35.86 for Division 2 riders,
34.68 for Div.3 riders and 32.78 for Div. 4. The Division 5 ladies,
it should be mentioned put in an excellent performance over such
a course. Well done Sus and Lee-anne. Unfortunately Sally had to
pull out earlier ? discretion being the better part of valour with an important
netball match in the afternoon calling for her remaining energy. Better
luck next time.
Pete Smith suddenly rembered having been a prizewinner over this course
two years ago decided to keep up the tradition by being fastest man on
the bike again. Did we ever doubt it.!
Don Riddell unfortunately had another puncture in that same tyre, which
is being turfed out and he is returning to his old faithfulls. John Cover
changed his chain the day before (heís not going to do that again) and
in a fury, using the only three gears that would work, contested the sprint
to take out third place in Div.1. Rodney Bernes (from the Northern Chapter)
was in the area and decided to join us for a race, and I am sure he was
glad he did, taking back a trophy and some well earned prize money.
I am sure Brett Richardson wished he had been there to see his good mate
Rob, take out 2nd prize in Division 2. Well deserved Rob.
We also welcomed a new member David Benbow, who nominated to
ride in Division 2, but I think we should have been kinder to him on his
first race, especially over this course. Hope it didnít put
you off
David. In the issuing of a licence to David, it brings our total
membership in the state to 102.!!
Once again CONGRATULATIONS to all riders, "you rode your socks
off".

Leonie ? thanks ? I didnít manage to try one.
As you all know we are having a raffle for a Mothers Day Hamper, thank you to those people who have donated items, but for it to be a worthwhile prize, it would be really really nice if there were a few more donations. Rodney Bernes took a book of 50 tickets to the north and has already sold them, it would be nice to think that there would be something for someone to win. DONATIONS PLEASE. Also if you did not get a book of raffle tickets last week, could you please take one this week. Thanks.
The day dawned warm and bright with not much wind for the Inaugural
Top of Brinktop to Top of Brinktop. 24 riders rode up the hill so that
they didnít have to ride up the hill at the start of the race?!
Now there is logic in that!!! Registration took place at the club
rooms and what with awaiting the arrival of rostered drivers and
the President back from his warm up it all got a bit late getting away.
Riders were vying for use of the road with Veteran Cars- an incongruous
sight, veteran cyclists going up the hill and veteran cars going down the
hill, there seemed to be an affiliation somewhere there, as there was a
lot of honking going on.
We were pleased to see Brett Richardson up and about visiting with
us, keep up the good work with the recovery.
Welcome back to Paul Barrow, who didnít quite make it up the hill twice,
hope you werenít put off.
Mark Bowdenís serious training regime in preparation for the FireMens
Games in Paris in July is starting to show effect, in that he rode away
from John Cover and Brendon Mahoney over Brinktop.
The logistics of starting the race from the T.O.B caused a late start,
and in the interest of recovering some lost time the gap between
groups was reduced to one minute and Div.3 and 4 rode off together.
John Mills and Chris Edwards worked very hard for the group along the
Orielton Road until Guy Ratcliffe and Derek Marsh bounded away up Fingerpost.
They were closely followed by Ray Appleby. These five riders
combined well to pick up Div.2 just before Richmond (even though they werenít
meant to!)
Ultimately Derek Marsh showed his penchant for the hills by riding
away from everybody. Well done Derek! Next was Super-Max,
who despite protesting that he doesnít like the hills, proved he can still
climb them very well, outsprinting David Silk (continuing to show improving
form).
Nigel Hume had his first ride in Division 2 and was extremely pleased
to finish 4th. Watch out you Frenchies.
Most riders declared the Inaugural T.O.B. an enjoyable change.

A third of the year has already gone, only two more thirds to the AGM!!
Hope you all had a good Easter.
It appears that one of our members had an excellent time, he had to
leave the State to achieve this. Well done David Dennis for representing
your club so brilliantly. We are proud of you. (well,
I am anyway!)
A resume of the results (first three places only) are on the
notice board for you to peruse, also the piece out of The Mercury
. Detailed results, along with photographs, may
be found on Richard Surfields web page - www.impactservice.net.au
Go to the bottom of his introductory page down to Maryborough.
Ray Aldridge the organiser, (only slightly biased) said that things went
off without a hitch, magnificent weather, and no complaints received.
Back to mundane matters --- 19 brave men only turned out for the practice
two stage. We welcomed a visitor from the Wollongong area ? Dylan
Forbes, an "ex-Tasmanian", who had an excellent ride taking out 1st prize
in Div.2 . Good to see Bob Bright back with us for a visit also.
The race although "short" in length is a hard race and shows
who the hill climbers really are.
Division 1 only had three riders due to some of the others vying for
the big bucks up at Bracknell. One dropped out on the first hill,
then there were two, and then one got tired and got a tow up behind the
rear car (saving himself for you- know -where) so then there was one. So
what can we say, he did it again, keep up the good work Mark, brilliant.!.
Derek Marshís performance must not go unmentioned, great ride up those
hills. Must have been that nice wheel you had to borrow from the handicapper,
who had such a good ride himself, he was going to move up a Division,
until he injured himself, nothing life threatening but will require a small
operation. So he will stay in Division 4, did he do it on purpose.
You may well ask.?!!
We canít leave out another promising hill climber ? after all these
years ? we think Max has a sneaking liking for the hills!!!!

Thanks to Leonie Silk and Brett Hansson who turned out to do the extra turning required.Really appreciate your help.
Thanks to all club members who have donated items for the Mothers Day Hamper. We do have quite a good collection now. But if there is still anything you would like to donate, we will receive items up to and including 7th May. All tickets to be returned on that date too ? thank you.
Talking of 7th May ? you will see that it is a Time Trial at Broadmarsh
? it has been arranged that we will hold a 25kms and 35kms race to suit
all comers. It does mean that we will need extra hands to do the
turning at these points in the road. So will all volunteers please take
one step forward.?
Also on the notice board ? what a lot for you to read ? is the monthly
newsletter that Mel Davies kindly sends from the W.V.C.C. One article
discusses the proposed Road Circuit for the Vet.Championships in 2001.
There was also an apology to the riders in one particular race for not
recording all their times due to the very close finish. That makes
me feel slightly better.!!

This is run by Chris and Lee who are the owners of the e-mail list ëTasmanian

get it answered without chasing around the countryside.
They may be contacted at : Lee. Adamson@north.com.au,

It would be of immense help to the handicapper if riders could give
an indication whether they will be competing in next weekís Mothers Day
Race, so that he will know how to handicap you!!!! If
you could let me know I will pass on this information to him, and see if
I can put in a good word for you, for a small fee, of course!

It was amazingly calm and warm at the dreaded Broadmarsh last week ?
Derek Marsh and I waited expectantly for enthusiastic riders to turn up,
at twenty minutes to ten, there were two "donít care if we donít
ride the way I feel", and Max who could hardly talk. Slowly
other riders, with the question "how far?" arrived. Some others coughed
their way to the sign- in table, and Brendon, who finally arrived "with
no legs" having used them all up the day before on a long ride around Cressy,
trying to keep up with David Dennis (who incidentally didnít turn up).
Brendon should know better!
So 12 riders lined up with 30second gaps, and rode off with light head
winds, and turned into the "stronger winds" for the homeward leg.
Results: 25km time trial Broadmarsh
John Cover 38.32 (sneaked on the funny bars whilst no one
was looking, but then John loves a time trial)
Mike Gargioni 39.03 (nearly coughed himself to death after all
the effort)
Chris Edwards 40.04 (only put his bike back in T-T mode the day
before after turning it into road bike for future use ? hope he remembers
to turn it back for this week)
Derek Marsh 41.16 (brilliant ride ? must have thought he still
had the good wheels on)
John Mills 42.23 (watch out Chris, he will be beating you in
time trials too soon)
Rob Reibel 42.37 ("I donít really like time trials ? donít know
what I am doing here")
Mark Bright 43.08 (not a bad ride for some one whose heart monitor
was already beeping before he started)
Nigel Hume 43.10 (couldnít really raise the enthusiasm but had
an all right ride anyway)
Mark Datlen 43.22 (keeping up the good work)
G. Ratcliffe 43.33 (had to come out because he had the Coke-
but wouldnít let Mark get too far ahead)
Murray Davies 45.51 (who only came out ëcos he thought it wasnít
a T-T but rode anyway)
B.Mahoney DNF (turned early ëcos he didnít have the legs.)
A RACE ROSTER MEETING IS TO BE HELD ON SUNDAY MAY 21ST AFTER RACING ? ALL ARE WELCOME. (as long as no one suggests too many off-the-base races!!!)
Talking about off the base, on the weekend of 3rd and 4th June
the Northern Chapter are holding a two day ? five stage tour, entry is
$10 ? prize money pool is $1,000.00. Accommodation can be arranged
through Phil Dunn, at a very reasonable rate (similar to the that offered
for the State Titles last year) That is the weekend of the Ken Self
Memorial race, which if needs be could be altered to the next weekend,
as we had made allowances for that to happen (in case of weather, etc,)
on the roster, having organised another 30K
Race. Could you please think about all that and let us
know what the outcome is.
A Northern Vets Winter Roster is on the notice board for your perusal.
We also have a North/South teams invitation race organised with the Northern Vets for 18th June. It has been mooted that this would be an "entry free" race, and soup and sandwiches, or some such could be arranged for afterwards. Any comments and offers of soup or sandwiches would be greatly appreciated.
The raffle will be drawn for the Mothers Day Hamper after racing today.
Cheers.

For the Mothers Day Trophy race there is a perpetual trophy engraved
?"Dedicated to mothers/wives /sweethearts without whose support we would
not be pedalling". So 21 riders with this support (or without in some cases)
took to the road in very strong headwinds. Some of the riders used the
race as a warm down after a grueling event up at Bishopsbourne the previous
day. Someone fresh from a holiday on the big island just hunting shooting
and fishing showed that change was as good as a rest and provided significant
extra horsepower to take the prize, with his group of Mark Bright, Nigel
Hume, Derek Marsh, Chris Edwards and Tony Morris all combining very well
to perform above their handicap. They were perhaps even stevens with div.1
riders on the return leg. Mark Datlen and Guy Ratcliffe (who will have
to stop meeting like this) hung on to within a few kmís of the finish.
The Mike Logan Quartet rode strongly but perhaps needed one extra rider!
David Dennis showed his sprinting prowess to win the fastest time trophy-is
it a bird, is it a plane, no just D.D, even without a number. We also enjoyed
his acceptance speech-he said and I quote "I would like to thank my wife
but she left me 11yrs ago and has been absolutely no support since". But
then he does keep pedalling- is there a message in this?!

The weather was kind with a good turn up of riders and supporters. The
southern riders won the days event with 26 points to the nothern total
of 38 points. Iím sure the next time this event is held their will be a
stronger contingent from the north in an effort to equal the ëclashesí.
Thanks to Brett Richardson for the donation of champagne for raffle
which raised $49.00, Sus Riley for sandwiches, Leonie Silk for soup
and for running the raffle with Shelley, Christine Hansson for sending
the cakes and the northern ladies for helping on the line and "in the kitchen".
The information on the reverse side is a stage by stage description
of ëDí grade results in the 2 day tour on 3-4 June.
THE TOUR
A "D" Grade perspective by Back Axle.
Brett Richardson was right. Clive rides for the big races. The
proof was evident with his win in the Tour last weekend.
Saturday a freezing day with heavy fog that saw all riders in longjohns
and extra tops.
Stage one A flat 43km gentle undulations.12 riders including 3 E grade riders set off at a steady 34km/hr into the mist with slight winds. Most riders swapped turns until F Clark put in a huge effort near the top of a small rise at the 30 Km mark, ` .a couple of riders disappeared before riders again swapped turns until 5km left when Lindy Sulzberger did a hard turn with Clive on the wheel. A gap was opened and maintained until R Millen closed it down with about 2 km to go A long sprint saw Clive go over the top of F Clark and kick again to win as R Millen drew along side. L Sulzberger was 4th.
Stage 2 A flat 27km t with gentle undulations. F Clark opened up a 80m gap on a rise at the 2 km mark. Clive chased him down an the two stayed away for about 7km before R Millen again dragged up the pack. The nip & tuck continued until F Clark led out in the sprint. Clive closed the gap only to be swamped by R Millen with L Sulzberger again 4th
Points After Day One Clive and R Millen equal. F Clark 3 behind and
L Sulzberger 5 behind
Sunday
Stage 3 cancelled due to rain.
Stage 4 38km with some climbs (Clive's worst nightmare) Clive wanted to win the stage but wanted to avoid a bunch sprint. He had overheard some pre race collusion on beating the big bloke from Hobart.
A muddling start over 5km saw Clive frustrated. R Millen was sitting in the pack and any one doing a steady turn was being left in front. Half way up a climb like going into Campania F Clark was in front, L Sulzberger 2nd and the rest strung out in a line. Clive steamed up the inside to 3rd and as a gap opened he grabbed the big chain ring and with the wind behind moved along side F Clark and said lets go. A furious turn, 45km /hr with F Clark and L Sulzberger on the wheel saw a gap of 60m open up. The three swapped turns over the next 15km to open up a good 800m gap over a chasing group of 3 (R Millen, P Daniel and P Herron). Clive was left in front for last 3 km , until 800m out F Clark tore down the other side of the road to open up a 15m gap Clive chased like he has never chased for years , getting the wheel 50m out and rolling over the top for a narrow win. Clive was determined to win and put a 3 point buffer between him and R Millen who had beaten him in the time trial and the road race at the state titles (in a sprint)
Stage 5 Time Trial 5.5km up hill into a head wind on the way out
fast coming back. R Millen was an east winner, Clive 2nd and F Clark
3rd
Or
The Tour
The truth about D grade as told by Clive
The weather was cold and foggy with light breezes. The hills short
and flat mostly to Clive's liking. Total distance about 113 km
Despite the rumors Clive's narrow win in D grade (2 points) was
due to some luck when in stage 4 he managed to stay with a break a way
led by Lindy Sulzberger and Frank Clark After sitting on and winning the
sprint he had enough points to allow for the anticipated bad time trial.
Race favourite Rob Millen who won two stages and had a second missed the
break in stage 4 which cost him the tour.
The weather also worked in Clive's favour. The cancelled stage of 40km
also was a blessing, Clive's limited training and excess weight saw him
tire progressively with each stage.
PS. Remember Wednesday afternoon training rides. Departs Ray Applebyís
shop at 1.30 pm. Come along and enjoy a good afternoonís ride.

put off, by the awful conditions.
What a day for Pete Dwyer to return to racing. Anyway you are
all to be congratulated for turning out in such conditions, but then thatís
what real riders do, donít they?
Apparently the one the only Brendon Mahoney time trial-ed from approximately
the Tea Tree Church to near the finish, when Ray Applebyís strong riding
carted Super Max to an advantageous position to overcome a tiring Brendon,
in the sprint.

A reminder for next weekís racing ? there will be a march over the bridge, consequently the bridge will be closed from 9 a.m. until 1p.m. so if you intend racing and you live on the wrong side of the river you will have to leave home early.
Also a special request from the "Race Secretary",
"could yews lot please try to bring the correct change
for your entry fee, it makes it difficult for doling out the prize
money if you all come with $50 notes!!!"
News from the intrepid competitors in the Worlds Firemens Games : Apparently the weather for the 75km road race was atrocious, 12deg C with rain. It was a tough course, with savage hills, cobblestones and narrow roads, sharp corners and a 300m climb to the finish. Mark Bowden had gapped the field by 20seconds only to suffer a puncture. Despite waving frantically at the Spares Vehicle it drove past without stopping(he obviously didnít wave in French). Nigel Hume crashed on a sharp corner and was thrown over the handlebars although performing well, at the time. He finished but was hyperthermic and needed a hot shower to recover. The next day Mark competed in the time trial and won a silver medal, being beaten by a rider from Luxembourg. On Day three in the Criterium, Nigel had a puncture and Mark had back spasms not long before the finish and was obviously unable to perform as he would have wished.
So what are we all going to do with ourselves after Sunday, I guess
we will sit and re-run all the tapes we have made. Rex and
I will be working out what to pack for next year ëcos we are going
to win the ìtrip for two to Paris to see the Tour live next yearî!!!!
What a great turn out for the 45K Graded Scratch, with two more prospective
new members, Matt Bryan and Peter Galligan. Welcome back to Allan
Williamson.
Brendon Mahoney was a bit soggy in the legs, after a soggy, rain drenched
99kms race up North on Saturday, so was happy to sit behind John Cover, who
powered along, using the race as a warm up for a Cross Country Mountain
Bike Race that afternoon. We have heard that he finished 4th in Expert
Class.Well done John!
Mark Datlen celebrated his elevation to division two with a win(watch
out Super Max!!)
Division 3 saw Matt Bryan ride away from the bunch for a strong win
so looks like Div. 2 has scored another rider(does this mean that you will
all be in Div.2 soon???) Of course some of you could go and keep
poor old John and Brendon company if it gets too crowded.
David OíBrien won division four. These new members
have obviously been hiding their lights under a bushell. Good to see Murray
is feeling well enough to pull off a win in Division 5.
Regarding fund raising for our major events this year.Apparently at the Roster meeting the idea of a sweep/lottery (such as run by the firemen) could be a good idea, selling the tickets, say $50, to individuals or groups of individuals, in the northern club as well, could be the easiest and once of way of raising money. This could raise at least $5000 with 100 tickets sold, with a prize of $2000. Brendon will discuss this with you after the race today, your imput would be greatly appreciated.
Is there anyone who has a set of rollers to sell, Rex has an interested buyer, who with a bit of training is contemplating becoming a member.

Well it was very nice to be back out with you all again, thank you for
the warm welcome, and what a good turn out for the Jim Culley Cup, and
quite fitting for young Pete Smith to be the winner of the cup this year.
Pete knew Jim Culley when he first took up cycling as a young lad and holds
Jim in high esteem. Hope you enjoy having the reminder around for
the year, donít forget to polish it. We also wish Pete and
Sally all the best for their trip to Austria for the World Championships.
Ray Appleby and Robert Taylor had already headed off, so there will be
a good representation of Tasmanian Veterans. Good luck to them
all, and may their tyres never puncture.
Now, about the race ? apparently Mark Bowden had to hurry home after
the race, so set the pace right from the start, and he and Pete Smith went
"ballistic"(Rexís word). Pete said that if he had known Mark
was only in a hurry to get home, heíd have let him go.(but good training
for Austria, Pete) The group that stayed with them, (Roger King,
Super Max, Rob Reibel(how does he do it on no training?- must have a lot
of natural talent) and the two ladies Sally and Eleanor, who are giving
the chaps something to think about) are to be congratulated for keeping
up the pace. Well done to Tony Morriss for hanging on. The
next group of 8 riders lead home by Don Riddell must have really cranked
the pace up in the last few kms as they were only 21 seconds or some 400+
metres behind. Times overall were impressively fast, shows what a
beautiful day and some very fast scratchmen can do for a race.

28 brave riders registered for the "Caravan Park" race- but oh
dear what can the matter be someone got locked in the lavatory ?so only
27 really "raced". But then there was the cyclist who tried to ride off
without his crash hat (where did he think he was ? on Le Tour)so he rode
with any division that would let him. Dead road said some, too many hills
said some, but on the other hand there are some that loved it, well as
the old saying goes, "you canít please everyone all of the time".
Actually could have made a great profit for the club by taking fines for
all the bad language at the finish!!!! Pleased to have Michael
Anderson out to add a bit of spice to Div.1 he certainly stirred
them up on the first hill, and in doing so left a brave but recovering
David Dennis behind. Knowing David though it wonít be long before
he is at the sharp end again.(that could be painful!). Brett Hanssonís
shaved legs are obviously the answer to achieving top speed for his win
in Div.1. Tony Morriss easily won Div 3 and has proved he has earned his
elevation to Div.2. (What could he do if he had a fancy bike?) Stephen
Bray must feel encouraged by his win in Div.5. Good to see Allan Williamson
fit and well and out racing again. We welcomed two new fully paid
up members this week, Ross and Peter, taking the total for the south to
59 and total for the state of 126 , which allowing for non-renewals from
last year is an increase of 54 members over last year, great for veteran
cycling in Tassie.

Racing next week is up North at the special feature race with the northern
vets, the Oatlands 50K- it is a graded handicap with five divisions. Prize
money is impressive, sponsored by the Midlands Hotel, where afternoon tea
will be served after the racing with presentations. Prizes paid down
to 10th place, and grade prizes will be paid to those not receiving prizes
over the line. There will also be spot prizes. So do come along
and join in. Racing starts at 11 a.m. from the Midlands Hotel,
the course is out and back along the Parratah Road. Registration
between 10 a.m. and 10 30 a.m. $10 entry.
17 stalwarts braved the wintery conditions out at New Norfolk for the
New Norfolk-Bushy Park race on the 20th August. We got a weather
report from El Presidente who is a local, and who solemnly declared it
was not raining out there, despite the Blackman Bay-ites and the Howrah-ites
not being able to see their hands in front of their faces. As always, except
when the south easterlies are on, it was fine and beaut down on the Carlton
Riviera. The race finally got underway, held up due to the
late but most welcome return of Norm Eastwood to racing, could have chosen
a better day Norm. With thousands of miles in his legs from
his tour of the big island Norm put in a good performance despite his concern.
Derek Marsh unfortunately had a fall at the railway line, our resident
orthopedic expert declared no bones broken so Derek got back on the bike
and finished the race, but with a bad headache. Last report
Derek was feeling better and has been out training again. Phil Salter must
have pruned his last apple tree, good to see him out racing again. Thank
you to Helen Davies for standing out in the rain to point people in the
right direction. After a quick handout of the prize money, those that had
offered their services dashed off to be marshals etc for the Winter Challenge.
Thanks to Brendon, Mark, Matt, Guy, Nigel and Christine Hansson for giving
up their time to help out at the event which enabled us to raise some cash
for the club towards our feature races later in the year. Thanks
everyone. The results sheet got a bit wet so the times are correct to the
minute, but the seconds are a bit sketchy.

Sunday 27th August dawned bright
and sunny, in Oatlands, even though it was a bit chilly on the wrong side
of the street. The friendly publican at the Midlands Hotel, who sponsored
the race, opened his doors and we all went inside to register. 49 riders
turned out for the inaugural Oatlands 50K Handicap. About 19 members travelled
up from the South, Brendon, David Sus,Mark B.Mark D. Brett Hansson, Murray,
Rod, Clive, Alan, Shane, Dale, Norm, Matt, Richard (our newest member)
Peter, Don and Leanne. Phil Dunne won the race, which was well deserved
battling it out with Matt Bryan. Brendon, Brett and John won prizes
in their division.( unlike Samson who lost his hair and lost his strength!!!,
the new- tonsarilly- plumage- bereft John, made a get away with Brett that
the others couldnít keep up with.) Mark Bright won a prize along with Shane
Hickey. Don very kindly waited for Leanne so that he didnít lose
her in the wilds of the Midlands, and for that they both managed to score
a bottle of bubbly to take home. David Dennis, also won one, but
I think Sus drank it on the way home. We had refreshments kindly
provided by mine host who declared the event such a success he is sponsoring
it again next year. I would be more specific about all your
placings if I hadnít lost my bit of paper, and the results havenít come
through from the north, perhaps you can get more details if you dial into
their web site, which I cant give you here because I have run out of blue
ink!! The address is on the notice board if you are interested.
The sad news we have to report is that our esteemed Presidente was
knocked off his bike in the sprint at the finish of the road raced during
the Nationals in Warrnambool. He was only 200 metres from the
line, and felt that he would have won it, except another rider crossed
his wheel and knocked him flying. He was taken off to hospital with
severe grazing to the right side of his body and has broken his collar
bone. Thankfully it was nothing worse, but Brendon had put in so much effort
training for these events. He came fifth in the Time Trial on the
previous day, but in his words, he was saving himself for the road race
which he was keen on winning. There were 25 in his age group, but only
a total of 110 entries overall, which is prettly poor for a National Championship
held in the home state of 900 members.
There is a Questionnaire for you all to fill in, I handed some out at Oatlands, if you have not received one yet please take one, fill it in and return it to me before the end of the month,
Also at a meeting before Brendon went away it was decideded that the feature race in November will be the Oatlands to Richmond via Pontville, Tea Tree and onto the Campania/Colebrook Road, finishing back up the road from the Club House to avoid traffic congestion. Presentations and refreshments will be at the Richmond Football Club Rooms afterwards.
The State Titles will be held in the south this year in and around Richmond. When we know what funding we are getting, we will be able to decided whether to have a two day event or just a road race .We will keep you posted about this.
Entry forms for both events will be available when everything is sorted
out.
For those of you who donít turn over and read the rest of the newsletter
here is the latest bulletin on El Presidente first..ÖBrendonís broken
collar bone was worse than he thought, a quick call on the old mobile to
our resident orthopedic expert put him in touch with the same surgeon who
recently repaired Brad McGee. Brendon now has six screws holding the bones
together, which were broken in three places. Hopefully, this will
work avoiding further surgery with bone grafts from his hips. He
was in good spirits when we spoke to him on Saturday 16th.
Brett Richardson has had further surgery on his ankle and will know
how successful it all was in three weeks time.
Guy Ratcliffe is off racing for about 6 weeks after ëdamagingí himself
on the downhill slopes at Perisher,he has taken the sling off but still
has to behave himself for the time being.(thanks for turning up Guy to
assist with marshalling.)
Best wishes to all riders for a speedy and successful recovery.
Only a small group of enthusiastic (well, I use that word loosely) riders
gathered outside what used to be the Coca Cola factory to the consternation
of the guard dog, for the not too often (thank goodness) Criterium.
Roger King opted to go up to Div.1 (and guess what, heíll have to stay
there!)he wanted to drag another member in to make up the numbers,
so a quick choice of the fastest man (in the sprint) in Div.2 went upÖ..but
ran out of air, not in his tyre this time, but in his lungs due to a dose
of the flu. Two riders put in a lot of effort to catch up with Div.2
and were disqualified for their troubles. One said he didnít care
anyway(he just likes riding with the big boys) and the other one said all
that effort for nothing. He has since read the rules.!!!!!!
Brett Richardson was determined to finish, as it was to be his last
ride for a while. Mark Datlen and Bob Bright complained about something
they had drunk the night before upsetting them. Or were they
just drunk the night before????
Div.3, 4 and 5 rode together and Dale Carney really enjoyed crunching
big gears up the hill and trying to "rip the legs off" the other ridersÖ..it
almost worked.

NEWSLETTER 24TH SEPTEMBER, 2000
Thirteen people tore themselves away from the Olys and turned up to do battle with the gale force winds for an amended 40Km sealed handicap. Anybody in their right mind would have stayed in front of the Teev. A bit of adjustment to the "secret" handicapping took place, and racing started, if a bit half heartedly. Two riders didnít complete the course, one cleared her computer so no one at home would know how far she didnít ride. The other rider said "would you please put ë mechanicalí next to my dnf in the paper so my mate wont know!!!!! The subterfuge some riders will go through. Letís face it, the wind was strong enough to blow dogs off chains, never mind cyclists off their bikes. Oh to be out of Tasmania now that September is here. We welcomed the President of the Northern Chapter for a race, could have picked a better day Gavin.

NOTICE ÖÖ Racing Next Sunday lst October will be the Malcolm Hut Road circuit. The start and finish will be outside the entrance to the EarthWorks Nursery on Grass Tree Hill Road, just up from where we normally finish in the Caltex 2 stage, and will comprise five circuits, at 8.75 kms per circuit, which according to my abacus is 43.75 kms. I trust that all rostered drivers will turn up or make other arrangements so that we are not let down, againÖ.as we will need extra marshalls in this race.
ALSO Ö. Christmas DinnerÖÖ..We should probably talk about appropriate dates so as not to clash with too many other events, as there are a few, at this time of year. 1st December or 8th December are two dates which have been promulgated as appropriate. Could we have a show of hands for one of these and also where shall be have the dinner. A small group attended last yearís dinner at Barilla, Cambridge, and it appeared it was enjoyed by all who attended. There is a three course meal, (carvery), with in house band and it cost $18.00. I believe this has gone up due to GST. .Another idea is a Roche O.May Cruise and dinner for $25.00 but we must have a minimum of 50 people (25 couples) which is really not too difficult to attain due to the fact that we have a membership of over 60 here in the south. The flyer about the above is on the notice board.
NEWSLETTER 8TH OCTOBER, 2000
What a day to go off base for the inaugural 44K (approx.)Malcom Hut
Road Circuit. The course was probably a good one for a better day,
the only trouble with a going round and around course is that riders can
drop out and drop out they did with regular monotony, and an incredible
number of excuses!!!! Or were they valourious in their discretion.
Hope Derek Marsh gets his new bike soon, because trying to turn
the pedals on that old clunker in those head winds would be difficult for
even Danny Clark!!! Max needed to go back and check on the urn!!! Rob Warren
slowed down ëcos he canít count and then couldnít be bothered catching
up, so he went and checked up on Max. Mike Logan didnít really have
an excuse for taking his number off but did ride along for the 5 mandatory
circuits, as did David Dennis. Potential new member Chris Howe got cramp
but promised to turn up next week, we told him it was a team time trial
and it would be easier!!!! Andrew Pitt kept going to the bitter end determined
to finish his first race out with the Vets. As usual Mark Bowden set the
pace for the Div. 1 riders leaving the rest of his group behind. Dale Carney
pleased with his win, although supposedly suffering from some self-inflicted
ailment!!!!.
Thanks to Jenny Hickey for her help once again and to Guy for putting
himself in mortal danger at the turn onto Cambridge Road.
