It appeared the format of the race was appreciated by all riders ñ except that the ìhandicapperî, who seemed to have got a little behind in the chase decided to stop and have a chat with tourists to the State and gave them a full run down on the best way to get to the East Coast, the delights of Tasmania and the vagaries of the weather, other wise I am sure he would have been up with the bunch!!!!!!(for this read ñ he was just too slow!)
Another reminder this week ñ this time regarding Race Rules ñ copies of which are available for your perusal - Under No.8 General Rules (a)Ö.All competitors are expected to abide by the State/Territory traffic laws which include keeping to the left of the carriageway on open roads and not crossing double white lines. Competitors should avoid unnecessarily obstructing other traffic. This is particularly applicable to sprint finishes and not abiding by this rule will result in disqualification, etc..!
On the reverse side of the Newsletter is the Roster for 9th March 1999 to 27th June 1999.

Cheers.
As you know the Handicapper will always do his best to put a rider in the Division to suit his ability going on previous form, etc. but there might be the odd reason why a rider feels he needs his placing changed, now if you canít think of an authentic reason why, here are a few tried and tested excuses you could use :-
Iíve had a flu virus for the last few weeks and havenít
done any training.
Iíve only been able to train once or twice in the past two weeks
because of work.
Iíve had a problem with my knees so I havenít been able
to do any hard training (Iíve heard that one)
My new wheels have yet to arrive (Bob Bright can use that one)
I am OK but I canít handle the hillÖ!!!
This is my first race of the season so I donít expect to do
wellÖ(and then we surprise ourselves!)
I never do well on this course..!!!
There is no way I can do well with this handicap!
Iíve just been put up a grade so there is no way I can win.!
(Courtesy of the Vets Gazette)
Now the secret is not to use the same excuse too often or he will get
suspiciousÖ
We only saw 16 riders start the first race of our new roster, the 50K Graded Handicap at Richmond but were very pleased to welcome in that number Clive Roper, after a long break(excuse the pun) and Peter Dwyer, trust it wont be long before they are both back to their old form, although having graded Peter into Div. 3 to ease him gently back into things he proved the gentleman and good rider he was by riding back to join the bunch, realising that despite his lay off he still had what it takes and was likely to win, but declined to put himself in that position .
Div.1 B.Hansson 1.17.33, G.Bennetts 1.17.34 J.Cover 1.17.35

1.31.38 P.Dwyer 1.31.39 R.Godfrey 1.33.25
C.Roper 1.36.13 A.Williamson 1.40.44
With strong, predominantly head winds out, it was hoped for a
tail wind on the way back, but due to the vagaries of the Tasmanian weather,
it turned out to be another head wind on the way backÖ the handicapper
has promised to compensate for the wind problem next time!ÖÖwhich
will give the other divisions a chance to lessen the gap.
That reminds me of the story of the optimist and the pessimistÖ..!!
Thanks to Leonie for turning up with an offer to help do the
turns, nice to see you, youíre welcome anytime and thanks indeed
to Bob Hortle, who actually did do the turning, the sign putting out and
the washing up, and who is definitely welcome anytimeÖ..!
Its early in the season, I know, but turn your thoughts to the National
Road Championships for 1999 in McLaren Vale, S.A., 18/19/20 September,
I do have limited entry forms and blurb about the event if anyone
is interested in thinking about it, entries close in August, so there is
still time to get in a bit of training. As a pre-cursor to that event
donít forget to turn up for the Fletcher Challenge Paper Derwent
Valley 50K GRADED Handicap on the 28th March, just enough time for
you to get in a couple of weeks hard trainingÖ. As you know
ìveteran cyclistsî come out of the woodwork to attend these
races. Also had a letter from Robin Gregory of the Northern
Vets wishing us well for our new season of racing with a tentative date
for the, now famous , Longford to Campbell Town, 24th October,
another date to set your sights on, I will of course remind you closer
to the event.
You might notice Iíve increased the font on this one, it might
be easier to read, and I donít have to think of things to put inÖÖ.Cheers.
The Fletcher Challenge Paper Derwent Valley 50K Graded Handicap went
off without a hitch despite the small number of riders, we missed some
of our regulars who were competing in the Maryborough races in Victoria
over Easter. We trust they all had good rides and even bring home
a trophy or two. Welcome back to Rod Hartridge, who despite falling
off the bike, aggravating an old injury, gamely climbed back on the bike
to finish the race. Welcome also to Alan Parrott, better luck next
time.
Classic excuse to handicapper, overheard, which didnít work incidentally,
" need to be in a lower division as I canít keep up with the X Brothers
in training ridesÖÖon the hills!!!"
Others did not quite have their heart in itÖlost their racing jersey???
Borrowed jersey did not quite have the winning feel to it, and upon returning
early commented theyíd lost heart, itís the hills Öyou
have to go up them both ways.!
Bob Bright had a great ride to win his Division , new wheels,
or secret training? It was his anniversary race and a fitting
end to his time with the Southern Vets. Bob has left to take up a
new position with Amcor in the North West but promises he will return
to race from time to time just to keep you all honest. We wish him
all the best in his new career and in his riding with the North West chapter.
Brendon Mahoney collected lst prize in Div.2 and made his farewells,
off on 5 weeks holiday incorporating some good racing in Maryborough over
Easter.

All competitors said it was a hard race, but they all enjoyed it really.,
and we managed
to get it finished before the rain started.
Congratulations are also in order to John Cover for taking out the State Veterans Mountain Bike Championship in Ulverstone last month, just to keep him happy we might roster the odd race to Colebrook via a paddock or two.
It was a beautiful day for the Two Stage Tour on 2nd May, with a turn
out
of 19 riders, including two of the Northern Vets who performed well
enough
to take home some winnings. Nice to have Norm Eastwood with us
again, and
Mark Bowden, who showed excellent form taking out fastest time and
first
in his Division, also welcome to new member Doug Watts.
Dale Carney, having opted not to ride, very kindly took over the
timekeeper's job as Dorothy was unwell, we hope to see her out with
us
again soon. Thanks also to all the other helpers, Mike Logan,
Leoni and
Gary Silk on the turns, and to Bob Hortle (and grandchildren) who did
a
fine job as following vehicle.
Jam butties, Mars bars and bananas were consumed at the end of stage
one,
and proved to give some of the riders that extra boost to put in a
good
performance in the second stage, all except Mark Bright who categorically
refused to eat a Mars Bar, and seemed to lag behind the front
bunch there
towards the end. But it was agreed by all that it was a very good event,
helped , of course, by the perfect weather for a bike race.
Apologies for the results not going in the paper, but having faxed the
results on a previous occasion we did the same last Sunday, only to
find a
"Special Note" at the end of the results section stating Ö
"Sports details will not be printed if submitted by fax of if they
are hand
written or typed, but can be sent by E-mail or phoned inÖ.etc. etcÖ!"
So herewith resultsÖ.

notice board for further info.
Stay around after the race for a few extra minutes as we have a draw
for
some special parcels for you to take home to share with that special
person
in your life..!
For those interested in making the trip the Nothern vets have
a race on
15th May - The Bracknell 50 check the notice board for details.
Cheers. See you at Richmond next week for the big one ? 60K Scratch
Race,
so get the miles in this week.
There was a good turn out for the Mothers Day Trophy Race, 17 riders
in all
? there was a 20+ knot headwind which was hard for all the riders,
especially Dave Silk who bravely took off on his own, due to lack of
companions ? another curve in the learning for the handicapper.!!
Norm Eastwood rode a tremendous race, at 67 is in excellent form, and
went
on to win ahead of Alan Williamson, who put in a very good effort not
getting caught by the Scratchmen. We lost one of the riders
and finally
realised it was Rod Hartridge, who having done well in the Jim Phillips
Memorial Race up North on the previous day (winning a sprint
along the
way, - class will always out - got a mention in the Examiner...)
it was
thought he might be taking it easy, but no, not Rod, he proved that
the age
of chivalry is not yet dead, and turned up with a bunch of flowers,
purchased from a roadside stall, which he shared between the timekeeper
and
the secretary, who were absolutely delighted. Thanks again Rod.
Thanks also to Max for doing the turning, despite a bad back, and he
would
like to know if anyone can introduce him to a little Japanese geisha
girl
who could run up and down his backÖfailing that can anyone show him
an
exercise to do that is less arduous than the one Rex showed himÖ!
Presentation of the prizes was delayed whilst Brett Hansson got out
the
silvo and polished up the perpetual trophy to hand over to this year's
winner.

Maybe it was the length of the race, or was it the wind, noÖI bet it
was
THE HILL, but only 9 brave men and Rod Hartridge(who turned up
late ?
riding out to the start and got a puncture!) who didn't let any of
the
above bother them and had a race anyway. No, really, we do know
that Derek
Marsh and Norm Eastwood were using their legs to put in good times
in the
City to Casino, Norm winning his age group., and Guy decided a nice
walk
round Lake St. Clair was preferable. Mike Logan backed up well
after
racing in the Bracknell 50 the previous day, and to whom we owe an
apology
for the error in his placing in the results info for the 30K
Handicap on
Mothers Day, we all know he can ride better than that, many apologies
Mike.

A pleasant surprise during the week came in the form of a postcard from
the
Northern Territory, from non other than the Travelling Uncle Peter
DwyerÖ..and I quote verbatim,(the P.C. is on the notice board
for you to
see.)
" Dear Maureen and Rex. I thought I should remind you and fellow
club
members of the reason for my absence from the ranks on Sunday mornings.
As
you can see, we are in the N.T. (Alice S. specifically).
I am missing the
competition and cameraderie of Sunday mornings. Travelling has
precluded
much cycling but when I do get on the bike, I enjoy the warm weather
and
flat roads. Hope all are well and Andre G. is well on the road
to
recovery. Cheers, Peter Dwyer"
Hope this doesn't mean that there will be a mass exodus of club
members to
also enjoy the warm weather and flat roads???
AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ?
After the race on 30th May 1999 it is intended to hold a Roster Meeting
to
formulate the next 6 months racing calendar, all club members are invited
to attend to have some input into the events and perhaps discuss any
other
matters they feel relevant.
Was it going to be 5 teams of 4 or 4 teams of 4 or 3 teams of 4 for
the 30K
Teams race on Sunday 22nd May, at one stage there it looked like
3 teams
of 4 and a quarter, then riders appeared on the horizon,
14 then 15, so
it ended up as 3 teams of 5, well we didn't have that one covered.
The
numbers were finally given out, and the race started. It
turned out to be
one of the best rides of the season for Dale Carney, improving
5 mins on
his previous time for that distance, Don Riddell put in a great
performance, and Max, still loving a sprint, came in all smiles, and
what
can we say about Brett Hansson, a brilliant ride as usual, and as usual
embarrassed to take his prize money, so he has promised not to
ride so
fast in future so that he doesn't have to be embarrassedÖ.! A winner's
a
winner Brett, don't you worry about it, you deserve every prize you
get.
Our other Brett brought up the rear but was pleased to be part of the
winning team, with the whole team performing so well it was a comprehensive
win. There was an interesting tussle between Max, Roger, Mark, Guy
and Rob
to gain points. And we might say it was a most popular
event for all
involved. So don't forget to turn up at the Roster Meeting
after the race
today, so you can ask can we please, please, have some more of those
races.
But don't forget there has to be a few races with a hill or two
in for the
othersÖ!

A reminder that the Ken Self Memorial Trophy Race is only a fortnight
away,
so please put that in your diary for a must turn up, and if possible
let
me know if you are going to be there, entry fee $8.00.
The day after is a public holiday so you will have time to recover
after a
hard fought 30K
We have had a letter from the Northern Vets, one of the points they
brought
up was about feature races jointly arranged for both clubs to participate
in and one already suggested is an interclub event at Bicheno on 11th
November, bearing in mind that the Ross to Richmond has been promulgated
for 14th November, it could be used as a time to sus out the competition.
Your input as paid up club members is valued and it would be appreciated
if
you stayed behind for the meeting today so we could hear your thoughts
on
this matter.
One last piece of vital information, the club now has an e-mail address
care of me at:- lgod@southcom.com.au
Cheers.
NEWSLETTER 6TH JUNE 1999
Well, here we are, officially in winter. A new roster has been
formulated,
at the meeting held after the race on 30th May, 1999, when many things
were
discussed including joining in races with the northern chapter, race
start
times, club jerseys, championship feature races, and the need to send
out a
questionnaire to all paid up members, some of whom don't even turn
up to
the races, as to what they expect or would like from their club.
It was a stressful start to the race, as there was only one of us there,
and Greg Bennetts' watch. The timekeeper turned up and the race
got under
way and I dashed off and did the turns. However, unbeknowns to
us all we
were being checked onÖÖ.and we did not meet the 8 conditions required
to
hold a race, as set down on the permit, which meant that Dorothy and
I
would have had to cut ourselves into 3, to be the lead vehicle
with
flashing light and appropriate signage, the intermediate vehicle as
you
were spread out over a distance of more than 2km and a follow vehicle
with
another flashing light and appropriate signage, plus of course the
two
turning people. We have had a friendly warning from Sgt.
Cooper at the
Bridgewater police HQ, if we do not abide by all 8 conditions no more
permits will be issued to us, which means that we will have to
have lots
more helpers join you in your Sunday morning activities or the race
must be
cancelled. The permits have been issued to me as Secretary of
the club and
as such I will be held responsible for any breach of any Act or By-law,
etc. So here is where the responsibility must be spread
to you as paid up
club members. We will either have to have a roster drawn
up so that
riders take it in turns to officiate or you bring out your little helpers.
It might also be worth considering as club members, that if it is not
your
kind of race or you are on the injured list you might like to offer
your
services to officiate so that those that want to race are able to do
so.
A phone call to the secretary on a Friday on 62658906 might help alleviate
the stress and panic which is now sure to ensue. We have
been warned -
we will be watched from now on. End of sermon.
Despite all that the race went off very well with some excellent
performances being put in by Mike Logan, and Roger Janes, who managed
to
sneak away from his two companions, Norm Eastwood who, despite being
dropped on the hills twice clawed his way back up to contest the sprint,
and Brett Richardson's new bike has seen him improve to take out lst
prize
in his division . Good to see Dave Silk, and he kept up with the lads,
to
come in 3rd, despite not being on the bike for a couple of weeks,
and our
new member Doug Watts showed he has form, watch out for him, and what
can
we say about Mark Bright, other than he has a very flowery vocabulary.
.Ö
and he should really give up those 100k rides on Saturday, and remember
to
S.H.F.S. (Save Himself for Sunday) Anyway great to see so many
riders turn
out.

Broadmarsh should be called Windmarsh, the wind always seems to blow
especially when we are holding a race out there. A good turn
up for the
Broadmarsh course, considering THE HILLÖ including our happy little
helpers, Dave and Gary Silk, and Dave Drake, to whom must go many thanks.
Hope the muscle injury is improving Dave(Silk).
A small hiccup, due to forgetting then not finding the "amber
flashing
lights", but a number of signs and sort of hazzard lights and a modicom
of
stress on the part of the incumbent Sec. saw the race finally get underwayÖ
Very hard head wind conditions to the turn which made for very fast
speeds
amongst the leading groups on the return. Some 46km average.
A brilliant win for Brendon, although he said Brett Hansson let him
win to
avoid being embarrased.,
Rex and Leigh rode with Div. 3. to keep them company and Brett Richardson
rode a time-trial, for which I insisted he take the prize money, for
being
the only one in his division to turn up.

Perfect conditions, a disappointing turn up for the Ken
Self Memorial 30K Handicap, but some excellent results. Rex
decided to keep Brett company as limit markers, followed by Clive and Leigh.
John Cover and Brendon were the scratchmen, joined at the last minute by
Greg Bennetts, just for the ride. Roger Janes made his group work
hard, and at the turn I thought there might be a need for CPR. Roger
rode on to take 2nd place in front of Clive in third place, leaving Dale
looking a bit pale at the finish. The ride of the day had to
be John Coverís, to take out Fastest Time, rumoured to be a record
time. Congratulations go to Leigh Richardson who took out the lst
prize and Perpetual trophy to keep polished. Well done Leigh, Roger

In the mail this week was a letter from Mel Davies, Sec. of AVCC requesting that I remind those interested in attending the Nationals in S.A. to think about getting their entries in soon, as Rowly Ferris in Adelaide is worried that numbers are low. I do have some entry forms with me so donít forget to ask for one.
Vehicle Rosters have been drawn up, please make sure you take one home with you today, and if you can pass one on to someone you ride with during the week please do so ? to save on postage. Thanks.
THE 30k TEAMS RACE, one of the favourite races, it seems, always a bit haphazard, until we know how many are going to turn up, 17 this time, so three teams of 4 and one of 5?!!! John Cover was on roster as front car and turner, and Roger (smart fellow) brought friend Martin to drive his car, Martin used to track race in the days of Kendrick Tucker , Olympian entrant at the Moscow Games, and not only that, Roger showed off his culinary skills, bringing us his very own home baked Apfel Cake. So I hope all car drivers took note of this and will keep up the traditionÖ.!!!
Robert Reibel back from his holiday and despite no training, performed
very well. A gentlemanly pace was enjoyed by all until
Campania, when Dale Carney decided that, despite the previous evenings
intake of non-performance enhancing substance, he would stir the pot and
lead the charge up the hill.
Subsequent attacks took place until the inevitable surge up Lowdina
Hill, which split the field, with Roger Janes riding very strongly to finish
with the leading group of five. Brett Hansson did a sterling job
returning to try and cart Dale Carney back up. (sort of super-domestique)!
Mike Logan had a spill
(again) just before the turn, hope the injury was not too bad, Mike,
just keep taking the tabletsÖ.!
Nice to see Brett, Murray and Allan remaining in company for the duration of the race with Brett prevailing in the surge to the line, itís that youthful enthusiasm again!

Shock Horror by ON THE ROAD
On The Road was shocked to spot a club member cruising down the Bonnet
in Taroona without his helmetÖ.Accidents happen so easily and are not always
your fault, look at Ray Walters and Andre Gavlik. You only
have one brain, use it, donít loose itÖ..
On the notice board is a gear table supplied by Clive Roper, its too big to print out in that format so if you want a copy perhaps one of our group who has access to one of those fancy photocopiers that can secretly copy could do so, about 25 thanks, then I can pass them out to interested parties.
The Jim Culley Memorial is coming up, and no-one can remember who won it last year. Could the person who won the perpetual trophy please bring it in pristine condition on the day, or return it in time, if they are not contesting.
Racing between Div 2 and Div 3 was extremely close, with Rod Hartridge
(hereinafter known as that big tall bloke) driving his group along to get
within virtual metres of the other riders. Roger Janes had
his first race in a higher grade and proved he will be a force to be reckoned
with. Dave Silk on no training at all, due to work commitments, continues
to amaze (himself as well as all of us) by handling the high pace required
in Div. 2. We welcome back Paul Barrow, after a break of some
four years, and hopefully with some training he will elevate himself
to the ranks of Div.1 again.
John Cover beat Brendon in the sprint to take fastest time as well
as first place in Div.1.
Good to see Mark Bright back on the bike despite still recovering from
a lingering dose of the flu.

Donít forget to make your bets for the Tour de France ? List of riders is on the notice board.
During the week Max OíHalloran was contacted by an honours student at
the Uni, a Michael Connacher, who requires cyclists to help him out with
tests he wants to carry out for his thesis. We have given him a list of
the members and he will be making contact with you to ask for your
assistance in this matter, it will, of course, be up to individuals whether
they wish to help or not, but thought I better let you know to expect a
call from Michael. Rex and I will have to decline on this one as
we are already involved in tests for our son who is doing sports science
at college, on Flexibility in varying temperaturesÖ! Thatís
going to be an interesting graphÖ.!
On the Road hadnít been on the road this week due to a bout of flu.. Hope he will be up and about soonÖ
It was only a 40km Graded Scratch Race but it turned into a bit of a
shambles due to no "middle car" ? some riders thought we could do without
it, which was proved wrong when the rear car, supposedly had to turn into
the lead car due to absence of middle car and the front riders were half-way
back before the tail-enders got to the turn. So we are always
going to have a middle car!
Brendon made an appointment to see the person who issues the permits
and had in depth discussions with him. He will tell you all about it at
the end of the racing today. But the outcome isÖwe are always
going to have a middle car..!!!
Must apologise to Dale Carney for omitting to mention his great ride
on 27th June in the amended 50K handicap..(hope he is not still crying)
A brilliant ride, his first win of the season, and well deserved.
Unfortunately, a knee problem precluded him from continuing the good
performance shown in the previous week, hope there is an improvement for
Brinktop this week.
Good to see Craig Jolley out racing again, and it was very kind of him to wait for his companions, and then let the old codger in the yellow jersey win, also a social visit from David Dennis who has promised to turn up to future races, and give some of you guys a ride for your money, (he didnít say that, but watch out anyway) Also good to see Dave Drake on the bike again, although not officially "racing", but keeping Alan and Brett company.
Mark Bowden mesmorised his opposition with his lairy pink socks and of course his good riding to take first place in his Div. But with their eyes on those socks, they didnít let him get too far ahead.
Roger Janes confirmed his elevation to Div. 2 was not misplaced, overcoming the work horse- Don Riddell.
If only Clive Roper had checked his message bank before the race, he could have been the middle car and been $5 in profit.!

TASMANIAN VETERANS CYCLING COUNCIL ? NEWSLETTER ? 25TH JULY 1999
17 riders turned out for the Sealed Handicap with improved conditions- sunny skies, and a nice little head wind to the turnÖJohn Cover broke away and rode strongly into said head wind widening the gap between himself and Greg Bennetts and Brendon Mahoney, leaving Brendon wondering, "what was the plan?"
Craig Jolley showed continuing return to form, leading the next group home, with Rob Reibel close on his heels, giving Rob his best ride to date.
Clive Roper also had a good ride ? secret training??
Whilst Alan Williamson fizzed back from the turn to almost catch Brett Richardson, which gave him 3rd Prize on handicap.
Thanks to Gary Silk and Murray Davies for helping with the time-keeping.
Thanks also to Brett, Sophie and Mrs. H. for the delicious chocolate cake, to have with the coffee and chat at the end of the race.

Don Riddell brought out his mountain bike riding friend, Tony Morriss, to swell the numbers, hope to see him again at other races.
Thanks to Rod Hartridge and Lee Mahoney for helping with the time keeping and finding lost riders.
We mustnít forget to mention the best thing about the day, was to see Andre Gavlik back amongst us, looking well, and chatting with everyone over coffee and Brendonís chocolate slice. Thanks Rod for thinking about bringing him out with you, hope he enjoyed his morning as much as we all enjoyed seeing him.
We had four teams of 5 riders, John Cover promised not to ride fast "cos he couldnít because he had a bad cold, a couple of others didnít feel they had it in them so asked "could they go in a good team"Ö.so the extra 3 kms must have been just too much.
Don Riddell took on the role of senior domestique and
in true professional fashion provided a good lead out for John Cover
to win in the sprint at the finish, beating Brendon by a whisker. A good
initiation for Tony, to be on a winning team. Don will now be affectionately
known as Don Fanigni.
Guy Ratcliffeís spinning classes must be doing him some
good , as he was right in the thick of it until the end.
It was a very closely contested race with only one point
separating the first and second teams.

Jim Culley Memorial
Jim Culley would have been pleased with the turn
out for his memorial race ? 27 riders in all. I know it sounds boring,
but it was another glorious day for a bike race, as the riders queued up
in front of the TV cameras. Brendon Mahoney was interviewed at length
about the reason for the race, and as we all sat expectantly at 6 pm to
watch Win TV, for those that missed it, we saw Dale having a drink of water,
Rex(like Godfrey from Dadís Army) and Dave Drake, looking like they were
trying too hard, and Brendon got to say something like, "we do this every
Sunday"ÖÖ! Hope all those viewers who ever thought about joining
the Club will be out here in their droves this week. Actually
we did welcome Nigel Hume and David Dennis back into the ranks of competitors,
with Graham Byrd and Kevin Jones introduced to their first Veterans race
by Rob Reibel. Also nice to see Ray Appleby and Doug Watts back out
racing.
John Cover had polished the Perpetual Trophy to a brilliant
shine, but unfortunately due to a bad dose of the flu, had to relinquish
it to Mark Bowden, who came off night shift, to have a brilliant ride.
Combining with Greg Bennetts and Brendon Mahoney he picked up most of the
other riders by Campania. But for David Dennis burying himself on
the front for some 2K after Fingerpost, Brett Richardson might well have
taken home the Trophy, but it was not to be, and he didnít even hear their
heavy breathing as they sneaked up behind him with a few hundred metres
to go.
Good to have Dorothy back, feeling much better.

Sadly, we have to report that this race was the last time you will have got to see Dave Silk on his Cecil Walker Bicycle with the gear and wheels, as his and Gary ës bike, a Gipieme, were stolen from under the house during the week, keep an eye out in case you see these bikes with other riders on them, or you are offered them as a hot deal by nefarious looking characters.
Clive roper is looking for 3 keen members to join him
next Wednesday for a ride from Ross to Hobart.
Travel by car to Ross, leaving Hobart at 8 00 a.m.
Call Clive early evening today on 0408136074.
P.S. Be prepared for a stop at Mood Food for refreshments. If it is raining Clive will pike. He is a fair weather rider only.

We had another good turn out for the 44K graded scratch via Tea Tree, it must be the weather. We welcomed Ron Horneís Get Fit-Keep Fit-God I wish I was Fit Group, hope we will see them again although I did hear that one or two were not happy with their handicap, perhaps they ought to talk to their parents about that. Many thanks to the couple who rode the motor bike and acted as Commissaires, because we probably did need one more vehicle to make it all fit, on that particular course. Great to see Kevin Collins (and family) if only on the side lines. Good to see Rob Warren back racing and on limited training riding well. Also welcome back to Andrew Briggs, hope your busy schedule will allow you another few races before the season is over. Ron Horne was dropped on "that hill" on the way back from Tea Tree but got back on again to win the sprint at the finish. With only a split second between Greg Bennetts and Brendon Mahoney fighting it out for second place. Rob Reibel shows continued improvement, it should not be long before he is riding in Div.2. The handicapper thought he was going quite fast in his sprint at the finish until Leigh Richardson flashed past at seemingly twice the pace, closely tailed by Dale Carney (shouldnít be long before the handicapper is riding in Div.5!!!) Although not all the action was sighted, it can be assumed that there was quite a tussle in Div. 2 with Mike Logan, Don Riddell and Rod Hartridge in an effort to the win that sprint at the finish.

Rumour has it that Clive Roper was trying out the Ross to Brighton course on Wednesday, a passing motorist commented that although he couldnít recognise Cliveís two companions, they looked "pretty done in", a lot more training needed then before November..!!!!!
A reminder about the Mike Cole Memorial race, on 22nd August, and also
if you could possibly give me an indication if you anticipate competing
in the Caltex Two Stage Tour on 5th September it would be appreciated.
THE REAL STORY OF THE ROSS TO HOBART BY CLIVE & FRIENDSÖ
Öentitled, " What a Day" ? by Clive.
Leaving Ross in fog and high cloud an easy pace of 24km/hr was established
by me and my companions, Brett Richardson and Murray Davies, to ensure
a finish. I did think that Murrayís rear tyre was flat as we started.
A slight chilly head breeze ensured a steady 24k/hr pace was maintained
until a short pit stop at St. Peters Pass. Murray seemed to drop
off on all rises, whilst Brett was keen to increase the pace on every hill.
Brett kept jumping up the road but I kept him under reins to make sure
Murray was not left behind. During the stop Brett opened his picnic
basket to share jam and bread sandwiches. On leaving
the rest area Murray showed the stop had rejuvenated him. Dropping
down off the Pass we emerged from the fog into a world of bright sunshine
and a slight tail wind. The pace increased and at times Brett was
sitting on 45k/hr. Gee, he was keen. Over Spring Hill
Brett took off in response to the subtle aroma of hot chips wafting up
the valley from Mood food. Murray was pedalling flat out at 50k/hr,
Brett was miles up the road, I jumped around Murray, and chased Brett down,
and by the lunch stop, the average was 26k/hr. Brett got carried
away and a 70k/hr chase down Spring Hill saw Murray fall well off the pace.
Plenty of food was scoffed down during the half-hour break and a few secret
improvements were made to Murrayís bike. Dysart Hill was easy
after lunch and Murray lead Brett over the top. Those secret bike
repairs worked! The hot mix from Kempton saw the pace up over 40k/hr
and by Bridgewater the average was 28k/hr. Ten Mile Hill was
a breeze and over the top Brett tried to jump on the back of a carÖwatch
him in the next raceÖhe needs to go up a grade. By the bike
track in Glenorchy the average was 28.25k/hr. We cruised into
town, Murray pealed off near the K Mart, Brett headed over the Bridge to
Tranmere and I struggled on to Taroona. Max and Rick
missed a good day and my tip for the next trophy race isÖ..MURRAY DAVIESÖ..his
bike is now 7k/hr faster. The end.
Well, there you have it, now you all know what you will be up against
in November!!!! Although secret repairs are not allowed in REAL RACES!!!!

HOT TIP by BACK AXLE
Rolling resistance is one enemy of the cyclist. The greater the resistance the more energy needed to maintain a constant speed. Check your tyre pressure. Have at least 120psi for races. Let the tyres down after races, and donít forget to pump them up for the next race. Back Axle needs 180psi in his tyres, whilst a lighter person can get away with less.

OTHER NEWS ? Leigh Richardson is now without bicycle - no, it hasnít been pinched, but he became temporarily unsighted whilst riding past The Grange and ran up the back of a stationary van. Van o.k. but Leigh bruised and bike broken, in two. I believe he is mortgaging the house to replace the broken bits in a hurry.
Guy Ratcliffe decided he needed some secret training after trailing in at the rear of the field last week, and is taking his long service leave and heading off to the UK for 3 months, on Sept.8th with bike in tow. Have a great trip, Guy, enjoy the cycling, but be aware itís Time Trial country you are going toÖand not too many stops for refreshments at those lovely country pubs.
Dale Carney has been volunteered as casual committee member and will take over the books in Guyís absence.

The race on the 5th September was supposed to be the Caltex Two Stage Tour, with generous sponsorship from Ken Tilyard at the Caltex Service Station, Howrah, an ex rider and past President, for those that donít know him. However, due to a clash of events (i.e. Fatherís Day) and the inclement weather, there was only a small number turned out, so an adjustment was made to the race and we held a 35k scratch race instead. A front came through whilst the riders were out on the road, some of the riders lost interest and didnít even make it to the turn and joined the others when they were on their way back. However, never one to miss an opportunity to "race" Brendon kept up the pace to the end with Brett Hansson, followed strongly by Greg Bennetts. Rod Hartridge wasnít going to let the Austrian contingent get the better of him. John Cover wasnít going to get into the melee and said "blow it", so got out his handkerchief and did , still piping Don Riddell at the post. Dale, Clive and Norm, trailed in, and unfortunately Nigel Hume had mechanical trouble.

26TH SEPTEMBER - CALTEX TWO STAGE TOUR
Extra helpers will be needed for 26th, please ,as we will need turners :- 1 for the left hand turn before the Bridge into Briggs Road, 1 for the left hand turn before the finish behind the Council Chambers at Brighton, also two turners and car to take off separately to do the turn near the Bowen Bridge in the 2nd stage, as well as the three cars on the road. If you can help out please let me know as we would love to see you.
The start to the day was a bit chilly but 16 hardy
riders turned out to contest the Lorne Copping Tropy Race. It must
have been cold ëcos John Cover went back for another layer of clothing,
the weight of which did not impede his performance. His group, along with
Don Riddell and his group, Max OíHalloranís and Rob Warrenís group all
had very strong rides to be within 10-20 secs of projected.
Also Dale Carneyís group worked their handicap
to the maximum and rode 40 seconds faster than projected enabling Dale
to win the sprint from an exhausted Clive Roper, with Brett Richardson
finishing third in his first ride in an elevated division. He may
have done better had his foot not pulled out of his pedal.
As a result of the ride from this division the handicapper will have to
tighten the reins.
Apologies for the results not appearing in the newspaper, due to circumstances beyond our control.
We were pleased to welcome Andrew Law back into racing again, hope he can make it to a few more races before the end of the season.
And in case you have all been wondering, Roger Janes is well on the road to recovery after a prolonged and recurring dose of the "disease" that has been going around, heíll be back to take up the cudgells next week, hopefully.
Thanks to Dave Silk for turning up again and helping with the driving, much appreciated.

NEWSLETTER 26TH SEPTEMBER 1999
We arrived nice and early at Windy Hollow, for
the 44K or 45K graded scratch race, not a good idea, back to the BP service
station to make use of the "services", I think weíll hire a porta-loo for
any subsequent races, there are definitely not enough trees to get behind
out there. Eleven riders ambled at intervals into the
parking area, not enough to make up divisions so we turned the race into
another one of those impromptu "scratch races"- when everyone starts
together, but inevitably doesnít stay together, and much to the delight
of the time keeper wended their way in one by one, until a "massive" sprint
at the finish between the "Div.4" riders, (Dale, Leigh and Brett Richardson)
to be won by Leigh, who was sorely disappointed to find out he didnít win
anything for all that effort, having forgotten already it was a scratch
race. But I must point out that John Cover and Don Riddell
very bravely "cleaved" the wind so that the remainder of the riders were
able to hang on until "the hill", when John decided it was time to stop
"pottering along" and applied the pressure to disappear into the distance.
He was chased by a strong group comprising Rob, Don, and Derek, with this
group only splitting on the final hill before the finish, and all this
reported from the back of the field by Rex Godfrey, who is very long sighted.
I think any one who mentions having a race
at Broadmarsh in the next roster will have to have their mouth washed out!
(Unless it is in the month when Tassie doesnít have any wind).

We managed to scrape up 12 riders to make 3 teams of 4 to contest the
40K Teams Points race. The club welcomed a new member, John Mills, who
licenced on the spot and hopes to be out with us as often as possible.
He has his sights set on a nice long ride in November! Being an ex triathlon
team member he rather enjoys time trials. John is quite
a handy member to have out riding as he knows a bit about bones and was
able to tell Rex Godfrey, as he lay in the road, that he had no bones broken,
and that he would live to ride another day. We are not sure which
day that will be, as he is a sorry sight at the moment. He does have
a cracked rib, which hurts when he laughs!!, and some nasty "fricton burns"
? his hand got infected and he was only able to have small amounts in his
glass, otherwise it was too difficult to hold!!! Apparently nearly
all of you had ridden away at this time and missed all the action, except
Brett Richardson, who was very kindly driving the rear car. This
let Rob Warren off the hook, who quite by chance had brought his
bike, so rode instead Brett said it was quite spectacular.
Rex blamed it on mechanical failureÖ.Youíve heard about the Plumberís dripping
tap..
Thanks to Leeanne Riddell for taking over the time keeping whilst I
dashed off to check on the injured.
Thanks also to Rob Reibel who was middle car and then lead car and
then ambulanceÖ
John Cover undercover of the disarray caused by the handicapper
being stupid enough to fall off sneaked off into the distance, followed
by Dale Carney, who shows continued improvement, and won the sprint from
Don Riddell, Mark Bright, Max OíHalloran and Nigel Hume.

And guess what, there is something about Max OíHalloran he didnít tell usÖ.once upon a time in South Australia he used to cycle and there was a particular hill he didnít like and he used to get off and walk up and from then on it was known as OíHalloran HillÖ..!
Entry forms for the State Titles should be in now, so if you havenít brought it with you I have spare ones and will be happy to take your money today!
Also if you havenít already got one Entry forms for the Ross to Brighton are also available.

? NEWSLETTER ? 17TH OCTOBER 1999
Not the best of conditions for a Brinktop, but 17 hardy riders turned out, including Max OíHalloran who says he has never been to South Australia! Was pleased to receive a lot more entries for the State Titles and with more coming in during the week (so much for NO LATE ENTRIES ? no one must have read that bit) we now have 35. This is your last chance todayÖbe brave enter for something ? Clive needs company in the sprint otherwise he will take lst 2nd and 3rd prizeÖ..also Division 2 riders who are going up for the titles need to think about the sprint as there are only two riders entered from that division.
We welcomed Gavin Moore President of the Launceston chapter for a race to keep up his momentum for the state titles and he rode a good race to take out 2nd prize in his Div. and thank you to Mrs. Moore for driving one of the cars.
Brett Richardson put in a charge for the sprint at the finish just ahead of D. Drake. Leigh Richardson lost impetus when his foot came out of the pedal and sauntered in. Murray Davies had an excellent ride and caught Div. 4 at the finish winning lst prize in his Division. Rob Reibel and Mark Bright being the only two riders left in Div. 2 decided to be gentlemen and rode in together to finish in a dead heat.
Alan Parrott and David Dennis turned out for a race and training ride respectively, Alan keeping up with the BIG THREE to finish 4th in Div. 1 David Dennis opted to ride backwards up the road rather than take another stab at the HILL.
Rob Warren rode extremely well to finish first over the line, well in front of Dale Carney. Watch out Rob there could be an upgrade if you are not carefulÖÖ!

Next week is the Longford to Campbell Town, quite a few riders are going up and there could possibly be car pooling. Nigel Hume has two spaces in his car and Brett Richardson can carry the bikes belonging to those two bodies. If anyone else is going up and can take extra riders please discuss it after the race today.
Ross to Brighton entry forms are available for those who would like them. Closing date is 8th November.

OCTOBER 1999
Firstly, a report on the great day out at New Norfolk for the
38k-ish race, in difficult conditions, despite the sunny day ? apparently
it was windy in the wrong direction up the hills. A good number turned
out, 22 in all, which included riding mate of John Mills ? Chris Edwards,
also Phil Salter from down the Huon, reckon heís seen John Cover out and
about round the orchards and wants to get that good It would have
made life easier for John, Brett and Andrew Law (to whom the handicapper
could have been a little kinder) if they had more manpower to make a dent
in the winning group. David Dennis took line honours, showing a return
to form and Div. 1!!! In the process he carted Nick Osborne to second place(and
Div 2) with Max OíHalloran, Don Riddell, and Derek Marsh also showing considerable
pace. Thanks to Alan for riding out on his own, in his last race
before hospitalisation from which he is recovering nicely, according to
the bulletins. Also good to have Roger Janes back in the ranks
,or Div 3 but just until he gets his form back. Murray
Davies in his first ride with Div 4 excelled himself to finish in
second place. We lost Dave Drake before the start ? he apparently
had a puncture whilst out warming up ? but rode the course out of interest
and did get back before we all went home.
Thank you to all the traffic stopping ladies ? Mrs. Riddell , Mrs.Davies,
and Charmian who got roped in at the finish , when we found all the parked
cars, near the line.

Sunday October 31st saw a good crowd turn out for the annual Longford to Campbell Town. 14 riders went up for the race, to make up an overall entry of 47 riders. Rex went up to return the Trophy he won last year although unable to contest, but was more than happy to see it handed over to our very own John Cover ? buoyed by the excellent win in his mountain bike race the previous day- showed what clean country air and hill work can do for a bloke, also got Fastest Time!! The Northern Vets then proceeded to take the next few places until Max OíHalloran and Brett Hansson took out minor placings. Thanks for asking me to accept your prize on your behalf Max, we did enjoy the few drinks we had with it!!!!! Unfortunately other members of the southern club might have come in with a chance had there not been a 12 bike pile-up before the finish, resulting in Gavin Moore receiving a broken collar bone and broken bone in his hand and some nasty grazes. Derek Marsh received some grazing and Nigel Hume thought he might feel worse on Monday. Trust all those involved are feeling better and had no serious repercussions from it all.
We took late entries for the State Titles at the pub and now have a roll up of 42, would have been 43 but Gavin had to drop out due injury.
The entries for the Ross to Brighton are coming in slowly, last year
we had 27 entries would hope we can raise that many this year. Closing
date 8th November.. or hand it to me at the Titles.

First the Teams Race on 31st October 1999 ? saw a good turn up ? Bob
Bright was down from the far North of the State and Mike Logan sneaked
in a friend from W.A. who had to ride with Mike ëcos he didnít know the
way, but he sure knew how to ride a bike ? a chap by the name of Jeff Leslie.
And of course guess whose team won? We also welcomed Guy Ratcliffe
back from his travels in the northern hemisphere, but unfortunately
under sad circumstances, to attend the funeral of his father.
Results :
First ? Greg Bennetts, Rob Warren,
Leigh Richardson, Mike Logan, Jeff Leslie.
Second - Brett Hansson, Don Riddell, Mark Bright, Bob Bright,
Dave Silk
Third - Brendon Mahoney, Derek Marsh,
Max OíHalloran, Brett Richardson, Guy Ratcliffe
Fourth - John Cover, Nigel Hume, Dale Carney, Murray
Davies, John Mills.
Next ? State Titles ? 6th and 7th November 1999 ? Longford (see
full results over page)
Dreadful weather on Saturday for the Road Race with a great turn out
of 35 riders. Both riders and officials were very soggy but despite
the conditions a high standard was shown by riders in all divisions, one
of note being that of Bob Bright down for the day from the far North of
the State.
Sunday dawned bright and sunny with light winds for the track.
Excellent performances by Brendon Mahoney and Brett Richardson. However,
for the Time Trial , the light winds turned into a very strong tail wind
to the turn of which Greg Bennetts took great advantage to average a mere
54.5km per hour, which ensured a win for him over Brett and John.
Then there was the ROSS TO BRIGHTON ? 14TH November 1999 ? Despite the
handicapper stopping 14 times on the way up to Ross to throw grass up into
the air!!!- we saw a strong tail wind to about Oatlands then the wind became
a crosswind-cum-headwind to make it a very hard race which split the groups
up leaving the stronger riders in Div.2 to pick up the other Divisions
by just after Spring Hill. Rodney Bernes from Div.3 managed to stay
with them to the finish to give him a very creditable second place over
the line. Division two riders were only marginally slower than Div.1
and performed well above handicap. Its interesting to note that Div.1
riders took 2 mins out of Div.2 up Constitution Hill and certainly looked
very impressive climbing faster than the refereeís Renault, but alas it
was too late. Andrew Law should have got the prize for most aggressive
rider and well done Jeff Garwood for finishing, although I had threatened
to kill him if he got off the bike (didnít want to get stuck with a tropy)
And the good news is the missing trophies were still in the shop-there
had been a communication breakdown. They are being desptached to the deserving
Northern recipients.
We had refreshments and presentations at the Brighton Pub afterwards
and drew the Raffle ? Phil Jones one of our members won the T.V. "Fancy
us winning a TV" he said when I delivered it to him. His family were
thrilled to pieces as they declare they have never won anything before.
The lady from Sorell School who won second prize (much to the chagrin of
her fellow workers who were coerced into buying tickets) was delighted
with her radio/cassette/cd player. And the third prize was equally well
received by Ray Appleby who needs a new phone for his other shop!
I am sure you will all be pleased to know that the Secretary, who was
suffering from an upper respiratory tract infection, apparently contracted
by being in close contact with Chris Edwardís cheque, is almost improved
and will be back in noisy form.
